Just imagine racing down a snow-covered hill, cold wind blowing in your face, your warm, wool scarf fluttering behind you. Most are made of plastic and are fast and easy to steer. Some even come with their own brakes and steering wheels. The most recognized kind of sled is a steel runner sled. These are the wood and metal sleds that you usually see in pictures and have been around for a long period of time.

Another type of sled is round, and its name sounds like it could be found in outer space. It's called a saucer sled. Saucer sleds let you spin and turn. But you better be careful. Since they do not let you steer, you might just be going backwards, sideways, or off the path altogether before you realize it. Also, snow tubes are round. They are filled with air and can also be used for floating in a pool or lake. Snow tubes let you bounce as you go over bumps, but they do not give you much control. When filling these kinds of sleds with air, remember not to fill them too full. If you do, there is the risk of them bursting in front of your eyes!

Remember that not all sheds can be bought in stores. A flattened cardboard box or garbage can lid can work just as well. Take your kids, your friends or just yourself and sled away when you have a chance. Google surprised the world by announcing on October 9 it would acquire California-based video website YouTube for a stock-for-stock transaction of US$1.6bn. This amount is the highest Google has paid for a nifty website. But what makes this acquisition unique is that this is the highest price ever paid for a user-generated web 2.0 content site.

YouTube simply adds to the Tribe of Google which boasts of areas as diverse as blogging, personalized search, satellite imagery, image management and cellular phone technology! The price tag of $1.6 billion has raised several eyebrows, and Google's economic wisdom is being challenged. However, what this deal means to web 2.0(a system of collaboration-based web development) has been widely ignored.

YouTube - a true web 2.0 Company

YouTube, founded in 2005 by Chad Hurley and others, is in the genre of a true web 2.0 media website consisting entirely of user-generated content. It ranks fourth in the sector after other US-based firms MySpace, Facebook and Wikipedia.

YouTube has played a major role in creating the new "clip culture". It is estimated to serve about a 100 million video clips every day to about 72 million unique visitors!

Under the new deal, YouTube is expected to retain its separate legal entity, with Google continuing to concentrate on its own Google Video website as a separate operation. However, it is premised that Google plans to leverage its "advertiser relationships" - a reference to its strategy of combining Google Adsense for Video with Google Video.

The basic theme seems to be that YouTube will benefit from Google's ad platform when it comes to monetization. Google search will also "improve the search experience" for YouTube users.

Copyright worries

Copyright concerns are another area which will keep Google and its lawyers really busy. There have been several reports of users viewing illegally copied music videos, films and TV programs via the YouTube network. Critics have even drawn parallels to the now-redundant Napster network, despite having a far better record.

To its credit, YouTube has struck deals with Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), Sony BMG Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group, in an effort to reduce copyright lawsuits.

What next?

Interestingly, prior to becoming a comedian he was an ordained Pentecostal Minister. But he was better known for his shock-rock humor who made biting commentaries of our time. It seemed nobody was spared, but his favorite targets were Rev. Jim Bakker of the PTL Club and his wife Tammy, Jessica Hahn, the Pope, Oral Roberts, religion in general, World Hunger, Gays, and several commentaries on sex, drugs and Rock n'Roll. I can still vividly remember his trademark scream. His humor would make just about everyone blush, but behind it all you had to admit there was an element of truth and wisdom in his comedy, and this is what ultimately endeared him to the public. Many didn't understand how a former minister could be so vulgar, but as for me, I clearly understood what he was trying to tell us.

What is sad is that Sam was cut down just as the times were changing and we needed his biting humor more than ever. Had Sam survived, imagine what he could have done with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill, President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, Drummer Tommy Lee and Pam Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith and Paris Hilton. But Sam's humor was not confined to sex, I would have loved to have heard his take on Bill Gates and Windows, Steve Jobs and the iPod, the Internet, the Taliban, Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, Iraq and Saddam Hussein, immigration, and on and on. Unfortunately, Sam missed a period of time which would have given him more fodder for his humor than he could have imagined. But such was not to be.

What few people realize is that just prior to his death, Sam was planning on giving up comedy and going back to being a Minister. As for me, Sam taught me that in an age of political correctness, maybe some intolerance and ridicule is deserved; that maybe we shouldn't just sit back and accept the status quo and instead we should speak up and voice our displeasure, and; that perhaps we take ourselves way too seriously.

So, Yes, I miss Sam, not just for how he ranted and raved, but more importantly, what he was trying to tell us.
